TEDx Video: Advice For Making the Most of Your 20s

I’m sure many of you have seen this by now as it’s made its rounds throughout social media, but I thought this was a great video to share with my readers in their 20s. I strongly encourage you to watch this. We often think of our 20s as the decade to be free and explore, not necessarily committed to anything in particular. I strongly encourage people to try new things and discover themselves in their 20s as well as they get older but the issue lies in people believing that because they are young and have time so therefore they can waste time. The TedX speaker in this video urges 20- somethings to not use this decade as a downtime in their career, relationships and life in general. This is simply because what you do in your 20s often sets you up for your 30s and onwards. So, if you do not build experiences during this time then you will be scrambling in your 30s. You don’t want to get to your 30s and realize that you wasted an entire decade. Explore, but make it count!

What are your thoughts on this? Would love to hear from my 20-somethings and mature readers!

MONDAY MOTIVATION: Surround Yourself with Other Powerful Women

When it comes to friendships, many womyn fear being too close to the light with the fear of being outshone. Meaning that when choosing other womyn to be around, many steer clear of those who's light shines the brightest - powerful, beautiful, talented, smart, etc. Now, I don't believe the hype that the media would have you buy into that all womyn are insecure, catty and jealous of each other. I rarely meet womyn who are out to tear each other down or who don't appreciate having a circle of great girlfriends. While I don't buy into the catty womyn theory, I do believe that many womyn avoid befriending those who are seemingly intimidating. They may not be as quick to befriend the beautiful girl standing in the centre of the room that everyone seems to be staring at, or the successful sista who's calling all the shots at work...there are many more scenarios like this but I think that we can sometimes suffer from comparison syndrome. And when it feels too incomparable, some womyn tend to stay away.

I was reading a great article over the weekend over at The Cut, called The Shine Theory: Why Powerful Women Should Befriend Each Other. I thought it was a great piece because it spoke about how society is set up to make us feel as if there aren't enough opportunities, love interests, etc. to go around for everyone when in actuality there is if you shift your perspective. If you look at the womyn who is on top as less intimidating and more as an ally and great resource then your friendships will be richer because there isn't that factor of competition or resentment.

I like to keep my circle of womyn and men all people who I feel are inspiring, uplifting and successful in all levels. I want some of that to rub off on me! It's also an exchange because where I can be a resource to some, I also know that I can go to my friends for advice on other things. We are all great in different ways so there is no feeling of competition. I truly believe that you should surround yourself with womyn that you admire and those who will push you to be better than you currently are. If you keep yourself with people who don't scare you (in a good way), push you or motivate you, then you are too comfortable.

Just think about it, the closer the proximity you are to the sun the hotter you get and the more you shine and glow. Remember that when that small voice in your head tells you that the womyn over there is too pretty, too successful, too intelligent or too whatever to be your friend. You only shine brighter when you stay closer to people who are great. Befriend them!

Happy Monday!

The Case of Trayvon Martin: Why is the Victim Continually Put on Trial?

It's been just over a year since the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by a man named George Zimmerman for looking "suspicious" in his neighborhood.  The news rocked the nation and many like me have not forgotten the impact of how incredibly unfair this fate is to Trayvon and many of our young black men around the world.

A year later, Trayvon's trial has finally gone to court. While to many it seems like an obvious open close type of case, we have heard countless stories and read many a headline that has tried to paint Trayvon has a troubled teen, a "thug". Has tried to make his killing appear as if it were his own fault; what he had somehow asked for. I have to say that every time I read these things my heart breaks over and over again for his soul that isn't able to defend himself and for his family that are missing their blood so deeply. This week, Zimmerman's defense team released and teased the media with supposed evidence about conflicting text messages and Trayvon's violent past. It just adds insult to injury. Why is Trayvon countlessly being put on trial? He is dead. No voice but his grieving parents' to defend him and his character. Why hasn't the man who committed the crime been questioned as much in the media? Instead we hear excuses and justifications for why taking an unarmed young man's life is not only okay, but justified.

I'm thankful for the judge who this week ruled that all of the evidence that Zimmerman's defense team has tried to use will not be considered in the trial. I am thankful that with this initial ruling, a young man who was robbed of all the things that he deserved to experience: graduation, prom, first love, getting a real job, and so many of life's simple experiences, will get the chance for a fair trial.

The trial begins in a few weeks. I'll be watching how this unfolds and praying for Trayvon and his family's peace every step of the way.

What are your thoughts on how Trayvon has been continually depicted throughout this process?

MONDAY MOTIVATION: Jay Leno Gas Pump Couple Show Us How to Have Fun With Your Partner

Recognize this couple? I have to tell you that their video cracked me up, made me smile from ear to ear and completely started off one of my Saturday morning in such good spirits. The couple became an Internet sensation recently when a video of them happily singing for a free tank of gas as they were surprised at a Costco gas pump by the Jay Leno show became a favorite and spread over social media. If you haven't seen this video, trust me it's a must see!

Well, that video surfaced a few weeks ago and since then the couple has been doing many interviews as people have been interested in finding out not only who this couple is but also, are they really that happy? I just read a great interview with them over at Essence.com and they say absolutely yes! They are high school sweethearts who will be celebrating their 12th year anniversary and say they are happy because they make having fun a priority.

I think people often start off having fun together in relationships during the dating phase or honeymoon period but once that bliss starts to fade, many people aren't as proactive about remaining in sync and making time to simply enjoy each other, to laugh. As a comedian, I truly feel that laughter can heal all things. What I found interesting in what they had to say, is that their pastor told them when they were newlyweds that the best thing they can do for their relationship is going on vacation regularly. So, they made a commitment to sticking to that advice and make sure to take vacations together or even just a night at a hotel locally.

Not everyone can afford to go away often and the difficulties of planning who will take car of the kids often leads people to abandon plans, but it's so important for couples to spend that "we" time together to experience new things and continue to connect in different ways.

It's always nice to know that you are in a relationship with someone who is genuinely your best/ great friend, who you just have such a fun time with you couldn't imagine spending it with anyone else in that moment.

So this week, if you are single start thinking about all the things that you love doing individually, start doing them regularly (if you don't already) and be open, keep your eye out for a cutie that you can share this interest with. If you are a couple or married, start planning a full vacation, one night getaway or even just a fun date night that is different from the usual.

Check out the full interview here and video below.

Have a happy & loving Monday!
