Monday Motivation: Claim 2013 as your year! (and a surprise announcement)

2012 Millionaire Artist workshop

How has your first week been so far? Have you been ploughing through your to-do list or has the conviction of your resolutions fizzled and faded?

Hopefully it’s the former and not the latter. But if you have already lost your motivation, that’s okay- because there is no time like the present to start anew and declare a brand new start.

You have a whole year ahead of you – and before you know it, it will be January 1st, 2014. So, what do you commit to achieving this year and how will you invest in yourself to make this year truly YOUR year?

If one of the things you wanted to achieve this year was to nurture your creative side and turn your passion into your life’s work I have some great news. The Millionaire Artist workshop is back!

This year’s Millionaire Artist workshop will take place February 2, 2013 with a fresh line-up of industry panelists as well as the frank advice and stories from yours truly.

The theme of the workshop will be “New Year, New You” and I’ll be announcing more details shortly including the location and guest panelists. This workshop is just the thing to help you get started with your resolutions AND stick to them. And for those of you who are already working hard to move your art to the next level we’ll have lots of tips for you too.

The last workshop had a great turn out and I received lots of great feedback. Here’s one of the emails I received after the workshop:

I have surrounded myself with complete gratitude since Trey Anthony's Millionaire Artist workshop. It was intimate and lively, yet excitable. The big click for me were the 5 things to do for your career before 8. I walked away from the workshop focused on remaining aware of my lifestyle, from where I am to where I am heading. I took out this day to look at my room, clean it and move around my bed set entirely. Immediately my thoughts were clear of clouds because my room is clear of clutter. - Tenika Francis, entrepreneur

And in keeping with tradition we will be giving away free tickets to the workshop. To enter the contest all you have to do is 1) subscribe to thetruthaccordingtotrey by entering your email address on the side panel and 2) send me an email to let me know you’ve subscribed. If you subscribe by January 16th you’ll be entered into a draw for a free ticket, winner to be announced next week.

I will also be announcing more details (panelists, venue, etc.) in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned to the blog and The Millionaire Artist Facebook page or follow me on Twitter for more info.

Let’s all vow to make 2013 the year of DOING & BEING exactly who we’ve imagined ourselves to be. Take action today. For more information, to sign up for the Millionaire Artist workshop and to enter the contest email safiab@treyanthonystudios.com.

MONDAY MOTIVATION: 4 tips to help you set and reach your goals

With November almost over, it’s getting to that time of year where people often find themselves wondering where the year went. Before we know it Christmas will be here and then we’ll be ringing in 2013! It might seem far away, but just remember how quickly the past 9 months have flown by and you’ll realize the same thing that I did. It’s time to start thinking about your 2013 resolutions.

I know, I know…some of you will tell me that you don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. There are usually 2 reasons that people give for not making NY resolutions. Either you don’t see the point of waiting until the new year to start on good habits OR because you never manage to keep them.

If you’re in the first group, kudos to you for being able to work on yourself throughout the year; that’s what we all should aspire to. This is exactly why I suggest everyone start thinking about your goals now.

Here are 4 tips that I find extremely helpful when setting and working towards my goals:

1.       Be specific. Don’t just say that you want to learn a new language. Your goal should include as many specifics as possible. What language do you want to learn? Is the goal to learn to speak, to read, to write or all of the above? And how long do you have to complete your goal. By setting a specific goal that is tied to a particular time, you make it easier to hold yourself accountable and to know when you’re veering off track.

2.       Set small steps to help you achieve a larger goal. Any large goal can be broken down into easier to handle parts that will increase your chances of following through. Many of us set goals to lose weight. But you need to go even further and decide how you are going to do that. You might choose to change your eating habits, to exercise more or to do both. Not only should you know how much weight you want to lose, and by when, but you should have daily goals for your nutrition and your exercise, and weekly or monthly weight loss goals. By breaking a big goal into small pieces it makes it less scary and also allows you to celebrate the smaller accomplishments as you work towards the final goal.

3.       Prioritize. Pick two or three important things to work on. You don’t have to (and probably can’t) change everything in your life all at once. If you set a long list of goals you risk becoming too overwhelmed to follow through on any of them. Instead, make a list of all of the things that you would like to work on and then rank them in the order of importance. Pick the most important ones to take on this year, and put the list somewhere safe. Once you've accomplished the first few goals, you can always go back to your list!

4.       Keep going. Just because the year is over doesn't mean you have to give up on the 2012 goals that you haven’t quite completed. Even if you didn't actually start on one, if it’s important to you and you've been wanting it for (at least) one year, it’s worth trying again.  Use the other 3 tips and you can be sure to accomplish it, along with any other goals that you make for 2013.

Have you accomplished your 2012 goals yet? Will you set any for next year? If so, please share them in the comments. I’d love to see what your goals are as I work on my own!

Buying Black...what does that mean?

"We need to pool our resources. Your money is suppose to bounce 8-12 times before it leaves our race. Hispanics money 6-7 times. Black money doesn't bounce once. The sooner we get it, we run to the nearest race to spend it. Anytime you put your money in another groups hand, you are aiding them in wiping you out."
'PowerNomics' - Dr. Claud Anderson

I almost want to leave that as a stand alone statement and hear your thoughts.  It is quite the statement and it made me think about the financial state of Black people in North America. In the US 27.4% of all Black people live in poverty (the highest of all the races.) If we were to start buying Black would that help us lower these numbers?

Micheal Baisden (for those who don't know, is a radio host in the states who brings up a lot of issues that are prevalent in the Black community) spoke about this issue on his radio show.  He asked why we don't buy Black and the consensus of the responses from the listeners was that 1) when we sell products/services they are too expensive and 2) we lack in customer service skills.

Let's take a look at the hair industry, for example.  African Americans (even though we have the highest poverty rates) spent $507 BILLION (out of our total estimated buying power of $836 billion) on hair and hair products in 2009. And lets face it....most of that is not going into the hands of black owners.  Walk into most black hair stores in the USA and they are Asian owned.  Same thing with nails....always done (rarely by Black owned businesses).

I know we try to live in a 'can't we all just get along' age, but I wonder if that attitude is keeping us complacent.

Do you buy Black? Should we be making a greater effort to buy Black? Is buying Black the solution to helping us as a people? Or is this just a racist ideal?

I am interested in hearing your thoughts.
